YEO
HIAP SENG Malaysia's proud history began in Amoy, China where a
soya sauce factory was set up in the year 1900. The initiative of
the founder of the Yeo clan, Yeo Kheng Lian, was brought to Asia
in 1937 when the family migrated to Singapore to start up a sauce
plant.
1955, was a landmark
year not just for the company but for the whole world when YEO
HIAP SENG changed conventional thinking by successfully bottling
soyabean milk. It was no longer a healthy traditional drink to
be slaved over a charcoal heated stove but a drink which was made
conveniently and readily available for mass consumption.
The year in which
Malaya became a nation was also an important milestone for YEO
HIAP SENG. 1957 saw the establishment of the first YEO HIAP SENG
office in Malaysia. YEO HIAP SENG incorporated its first sales
company in Malaysia under the banner of YEO HIAP SENG (Sarawak)
Sdn Bhd which was followed by the establishment of YEO HIAP SENG
Canning Factory (Malaya) Sdn Bhd in Petaling Jaya, Selangor in
1959.
1967 was a year of
great achievements for the company. Following their success in bottling
soyabean milk, YEO HIAP SENG once again introduced new consumption
habits when they became the first in the world to introduce soyabean
milk and chrysanthemum tea in tetrahedron one-way paper containers.
This was also the year that YEO HIAP SENG introduced canned curry
chicken to the world.

Growing from strength to
strength, the company commenced canned food operations in its newly constructed
Johor Baru plant in 1971 and soon, a public company named YEO HIAP SENG
(Malaysia) Bhd was born in 1974. The company was listed on the Kuala Lumpur
Stock Exchange in 1975.
The successes continued to transpire for YEO HIAP SENG as 1974 saw the
tetrabrik replace the tetrahedron in July of the year when the company
installed the first tetra brik packaging machine. In the years of 1976
and 1978, YEO HIAP SENG became the first in the world to pack herbal tea
in tetra briks as well as successfully bottle sugarcane drinks.
In 1983, YEO HIAP SENG became
the first tetra brik drinks manufacturer outside Japan to produce and
sell ONE BILLION packs of tetra brik drinks; a testament to years of endless
effort, growth and innovation.

that has put YHS in the forefront of the food and beverage industry.

For
a company which was experiencing rapid growth, diversification into
related fields was a natural move. YEO HIAP SENG Malaysia introduced
the Schweppes range of canned drinks in 1985 while in 1984, became the
first in Malaysia to develop and pack carbonated tropical fruit flavour
drinks such as pomelo, lychee and soursop under the "Fizzi" brand name
in 325ml cans. That year also saw YEO HIAP SENG Malaysia becoming the
first in the country to introduce 100% mixed fruit juices in 125ml tetra
briks under the "Junior Juice" brand. This was followed by the launch
of Yeo's sweetened condensed milk in 1992.
By 1994, Yeo's was already
a household name in both Malaysia and Singapore. It was time for the
company's expansion plans to take effect. YEO HIAP SENG established
a joint venture with Worldgrain Co. Ltd to produce canned Asian drinks
and in 1995, YEO HIAP SENG acquired subsidiary Rengo International
Investment Ltd Hong Kong which operates Xiamen Rengo Food Co. Ltd.
to manufacture and distribute instant noodles in China.
Back home, the innovation
and research & development did not let off as YEO HIAP SENG produced
non-fried instant noodles; a first in Malaysia. With the newly established
opportunities abroad and a bold new outlook domestically, the company
had to physically reflect the great changes it was undergoing. The
familiar Yeo's logo was redesigned to give it a fresher and more dynamic
look and was subsequently introduced to the Malaysian community in
1996.
With a watchful eye
on the future, YEO HIAP SENG Malaysia has made a bold commitment to
information technology. Computer training and development is now at
the top of the human resource training agenda while plans are underway
to link up all YEO HIAP SENG Malaysia branches nationwide by the end
of 1997. Sales staff are equipped with hand-held computers with enhanced
processing abilities which will improve the overall responsiveness,
customer satisfaction and competitiveness of the Group. Quality control
is ever paramount in YEO HIAP SENG Malaysia's operations and is maintained
through quality control procedures like the HACCP and staff training.
With a proud history and a bright future, Malaysia's "natural choice"
now looks to the future with confident anticipation.
